Outreach Work
The aim of The What? Centre's Outreach work
is to respond to the needs of young people, and embrace the need
to make What? Centre services more available to marginalised groups
and young people across the Dudley Borough who may otherwise never
step across the centre’s threshold. This has been made possible
through our committed team and the excellent relationships we foster
with other grass roots agencies, committed to partnership working.
Schools & Colleges
An important part of our Outreach work has
involved visiting young people in their own settings, usually schools
or colleges to showcase What? Centre services and offer information
and advice in group workshops.
The main demand in this arena has been for
drugs awareness and sexual health/relationships sessions, both in
mainstream and special needs venues. The sessions are designed to
be fun and informative, encouraging young people to look again at
the urban myths and peer pressure that influence the choices they
make.
They are also an essential way to advertise
the What? Centre. In many ways, young people themselves are also
involved in marketing our service. Word of mouth is the most often
cited source of knowledge about the What? Centre. The young people
who have had a positive experience of the service recommend us and
we find that many of our clients are first brought along by their
friends as it helps to break to ice.
Sexual Health & Chlamydia Testing
Through our involvement with the SHAPE (Sexual
Health a Priority for Everyone) group, chaired by Dudley PCT, What?
Centre workers have attended health fairs, colleges and young people’s
groups, offering information, advice and chlamydia screening. These
events also offer a valuable opportunity to signpost young people
to our service where they can access ongoing support to maintain
a healthy lifestyle.
Chlamydia Testing
The What? Centre recently worked in Partnership
with Brook to carry out Chlamydia testing on young people in the
Dudley Borough. We reached a large number of young people and the
initiative was a great success.
